Life Giving you Lemons? Make Lemonade – Or Clean Your House, Naturally – Tips From Your Chicago Handyman Specialists

lemon_plThat’s right, lemon juice is a natural disinfectant, removes stains & can be used as a polish for metal.  Try using a cut lemon or lemon juice to get rid of unpleasant odors from your refrigerator, microwave or your cutting board.

Additionally, by squirting lemon juice on your windowsills, along baseboards, door thresholds & into cracks & crevices, you will deter insects from invading your home.  Lots of insects are super sensitive to smell.  Among these pests are ants, cockroaches & spiders (even fleas).  Try adding some lemon juice into your floor washing products to ramp up your anti-bug, butt-kicking action.

Easy on the wallet & eco-friendly, let lemons AID you in your everyday cleaning!

Fish fry night & salad dressings aside, vinegar happens to be an affordable, healthy disinfectant for use around your home.

Try using it to clean your drains. Pour 1/2 cup baking soda into your drain, then 1/2 cup vinegar; the mixture is going to foam (this is ok, no explosions, we promise).  This foaming action means that it is cleaning and deodorizing your drain.  Do this as often as you see fit but we recommend at least every 2-3 weeks for best practices.

You can also use vinegar as a window cleaner. In a spray bottle, combine white vinegar with water (equal parts) & voila! Spray your glass surfaces & wipe them until dry. (This mixture can also be used to get rid of the gross soap scum that collect in your showers).

Additional use:  Eliminating nasty pet odors.  Mix 1 part white vinegar to 3 parts water.  Pour on stained areas & blot; don’t rub.  Just blot. It will help.

Did you know that your Stoli can help pep up your wilting flowers? – Try mixing a few drops of vodka with a teaspoon or so of sugar & add to your vase.  You will start to notice that your V-Day gifts spring back to life!

Vodka is also another solution for window streaks – Next time, instead of your blue, chemical filled window spray, spritz your glass panes with diluted vodka.  We suggest wiping them down after with a lint-free cloth for best results.

Have mold or mildew build-up?  Try filling a spray bottle with vodka (the cheap stuff will do – If you are using Tito’s vodka, please invite us over ASAP :P) & spray it onto the mold  and /or mildew.  Let this set in for a good 15 minutes.  If your sponge just isn’t cutting it, go crazy with a toothbrush & you will soon be mold / mildew free!
