Cleaning Wax out of a Carpet
At one time or another it’s happened to all of us. You light a candle and whether you’re transporting it from one room to the next or it’s simply running its course and has escaped your notice, melted wax has spilled over and nestled itself deeply within the fibers of your plush carpet.
It’s a maddening experience, to be sure. Once wax melts into the carpet, most people feel it’s there for good. But the truth is there is a way to extract melted wax from your carpeting. And, no, it doesn’t involve a patch job.
The first thing you have to do is obvious: carefully wipe up as much of the melted wax as you can before it cools. If you grab a clean, dry cloth and dab at the melted wax without pushing it further into the carpet fibers, you can avoid extensive penetration of the carpet fibers. Next, find a waterproof plastic bag (like a ziplock storage bag) and press it down over the stain. It’s important that the bag be waterproof and that you avoid allowing condensation to touch the wax as that will make the stain even more difficult to remove.
The wax should freeze after a few minutes and be easier to remove, at this point. With a small comb, scrape out the frozen wax from the fibers in the carpet in as much as you are able to remove any clumps that are visible. Next, apply a clean, dry terry cloth over the remaining wax and press a warm (not hot) iron over the cloth to heat the wax. The cloth will absorb much of the remaining wax as it melts.
Remember not to allow the iron to get too hot or to be placed on a high heat setting. You could melt the carpet fibers in the process. Repeat the last step as necessary and finish by cleaning the whole carpet with a hot steam cleaner to remove the remaining wax and refresh the pile.
Of course, it’s easier just to avoid spilling wax on your carpet in the first place to remove melted wax once it happens. But when it happens, you now know what to do.
